BISHOPRIC MESSAGE

Bishop Sam St.Clair

The first step in gaining capacity to love others like the Savior is to withhold judgment. Mother Theresa stated: “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” The Savior condemned judgment of others in the plainest of terms (Matthew 7:1-2). I love the story of the sons of Mosiah. It was this very principle of withholding judgment, instead patiently exercising love that empowered the sons of Mosiah to redeem their Lamanite brethren (Alma 26: 24-26, 29). Unlike their Nephite brethren that judged, condemned and wanted to destroy the Lamanites, the sons of Mosiah, having felt the Savior’s love instead of judgment in their own conversion (Alma 26: 17-20) were able to withhold judgment of the Lamanites (Alma 26: 28-29), which allowed them to heal the division between Lehi’s family (Alma 26: 33).

I invite each of us to withhold judgment as a first step to loving others. I testify that it is a gift we can be given as we pray for it (Moroni 7:48).

BISHOPRIC MESSAGE

Dear Ward Members,

As I look forward to conference this week, I’ve felt an added measure of gratitude for our current prophet, Russell M. Nelson, as well his predecessors. In a time where it would be so easy to be “blown about by every wind of doctrine,” we have prophets who help lead the way through a very confusing world. While listening to talks from last General Conference, I have been so impressed with President Nelson’s prophetic tone of optimism, energy, and faith in Jesus Christ. I found this section of his Sunday Morning address especially direct as he shared a message of hope and also gave us clear direction of what we need to do to survive and thrive in the last days:

"I am optimistic about the future. It will be filled with opportunities for each of us to progress, contribute, and take the gospel to every corner of the earth. But I am also not naive about the days ahead. We live in a world that is complex and increasingly contentious. The constant availability of social media and a 24-hour news cycle bombard us with relentless messages. If we are to have any hope of sifting through the myriad of voices and the philosophies of men that attack truth, we must learn to receive revelation.

"Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory. But in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost. My beloved brothers and sisters, I plead with you to increase your spiritual capacity to receive revelation."

I encourage all of us to consider what we can do to heed President Nelson’s call to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation." Bishop St. Clair has often talked about the power of daily acts of devotion and I think this is an excellent place to take a quick spiritual health assessment. We need to each regularly ask ourselves how we’re doing with our daily acts of devotion. 

I know that there is a direct connection between our spiritual capacity to receive revelation and habits of daily prayer and scripture study. I also know our Heavenly Father loves us and I'm grateful for our imperfect attempts at discipleship. He is much more merciful with us than we are with ourselves sometimes. So, if you’re doing well with these habits, great job. And if you’ve slacked off lately then renew your efforts because we all need to receive the personal revelation our Heavenly Father wants to send us.

Mat and Renee Memmott recently received the blessing of having their family sealed together forever in the Provo City Center Temple.  We rejoice with the Memmott family at this glorious event.

UPDATE ON FORMER WARD MEMBER LAUREN FOLSOM

Lauren Folsom, now living in Medford Oregon, was up visiting for General Conference.  She took time out of her busy schedule to say hello and wanted to thank the ward for their love and support since the passing of her husband Ryan in January this year.  A quick update: Lauren and her three young sons now  have their own home on the same block as three of her best friends.  The new home is situated near her parents and Ryan's parents. She has a lot of support around her and is doing the best she can.  The boys are doing great.  Lauren really wanted the Oak Hill's 7the Ward to know how much she loves each and everyone of you.
